Listening to the Body: Using Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) and Dance/Movement Therapy to Facilitate Change

Dance/movement therapists work across the spectrum of stillness and movement, using the creative process and the body/mind connection to support change, healing, and growth with clients. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) is often described as a "body-based talk therapy" that incorporates contemporary findings in neurobiology and mindfulness as a therapeutic process. It offers a framework for addressing trauma and attachment issues and provides a lens for understanding these issues that can help dance/movement therapists pace and structure therapeutic work effectively. Dance/movement therapists can bring the richness of the discipline of DMT to SP principles and methods.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand basic principles of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) and ways that SP can support DMT practices.

  2. Articulate the value of addressing small and subtle body cues and movement as well as larger scale movement.

  3. Identify new possibilities for working with cognitive, emotional and body levels of experience.
