Using Bilateral Stimulation to Treat Trauma: The Interface Between Dance/Movement Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Current trauma research supports rhythmic/repetitive input within a secure relationship as an essential intervention to treat trauma. This webinar explores how bilateral stimulation, inherent in both EMDR and DMT, can support healthy neurodevelopment in traumatized individuals. Additionally, the presenters focus on how memory is stored in the body and share specific interventions to support the processing and integration of unconscious experience.

Presenters Bios:

 

 

 

 

 

Emily McNeil, LPC, BC-DMT, CIMI, EMDR cert., is the owner of The Mariposa Center for Infant, Child, and Family Enrichment. She is an early childhood and family therapist, with specialties in infant mental health, maternal pre- and peri-natal mental health, trauma, adoption/foster care, and developmental delay. She received her Master of Arts degree in Somatic Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Dance/Movement Therapy from Naropa University. She is a board certified Dance/Movement Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor. She also is a Certified Infant Massage Instructor and holds advanced training in EMDR – a trauma-treatment modality and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She co-founded the Adams County NICU Task Force and Team in order to improve the support and therapeutic services premature and medically fragile babies and their families receive post-discharge from the NICU. She has trained extensively with Drs. Joy Brown and Ayelet Talmi in the BABIES Model – a specialized approach to working with NICU grads and their families. She is a member of The American Dance Therapy Association and the Colorado Association of Infant Mental Health. She has worked with children and families for over 11 years.

 

 

 

 

 

Jennifer Platt LPC, R-DMT, EMDR cert., is the owner of the Mariposa Center. She is licensed professional counselor, registered dance/movement therapist, and certified EMDR therapist with over ten years of professional experience working with children and families in a variety of mental health and educational settings. Through the Child Trauma Academy, Jennifer has received extensive training in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics developed by Dr. Bruce Perry. Utilizing Dr. Perry’s model and research, Jennifer has created unique trainings on the therapeutic benefits of the creative arts to support healthy development in children and families. Additionally, Jennifer was the co-creator and supervisor of the Creative Art Therapy program at Mt. St. Vincent Home from 2008-2012, a residential and day treatment program for children. She has presented nationally on the topics of child development, trauma, and creative art therapies. Jennifer served on the board of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Dance Therapy Association, and is a member of the Colorado Association for Play Therapy, National Association for Play Therapy, American Psychological Association, American Dance Therapy Association, and the EMDR International Association. In addition to providing clinical services to children and families at The Mariposa Center, Emily and Jennifer have presented on child devlopment, trauma, attachment, creative art therapies, and vicarious trauma throughout Colorado at mulitple venues including: Naropa University, The Rocky Mountain Early Childhood Conference, The Colorado Post-Adoption Resource Center Conference, The Wild Plum Center, and Boulder Valley Public Schools.
